a four piece instrumental band formed at the end of 1997. This was not however,
the beginning. Gavin and Howard rehearsed as Billy Mahonie Mark 1 in 1994.
They were joined by bass player Crawford and a succession of singers, this
was where they followed a fool's path. But as new influences began to infiltrate,
Billy Mahonie began to embark on a far more interesting path; thus Billy
Mahonie Mark 2 was born. Collaborations were made on four track tape players:
often Howard would record some drums and go home leaving Gavin to turn them
into music. Kev Penney was enlisted, along with Hywell Dinsdale. Both were
to play bass, with Hywell occasionally playing guitar. In 1998 Mahonie released
two records, both 7 inch” singles: "Hoon" and "Whistling
Sam"/"On The Brinck". This was followed by their debut album
The Big Dig, released by Too Pure.
