Coffins originally formed under the name Compromise You Need 12 years ago and at the time were playing a style more akin to Godflesh and Swans, whom Coffins guitarist/vocalist Uchino hails as huge influences. When drummer You entered the picture the sound morphed into more of a Kyuss/Cathedral style. No surprise then that this early incarnation of Coffins shared members with other Japanese bands including the Sabbath-inspired doomsters in Church Of Misery and Dot(.).
Things came to a halt with members busy with other projects and Coffins disbanded in 2000. Uchino and You reformed early in 2003 and at that point the sound evolved (or more appropriately, devolved) into the putrid filthy doom death they currently deal in.
A demo, simply titled Demo 2003, was recorded and eventually was re-released by Living Dead Society as the Sacrifice To Evil Spirit MCD in 2005. That MCD also included live versions of Coffins' The Unspeakable Pain (appearing as a studio recording on their debut album) and a punishingly heavy cover of Venom's "Warhead".
Soon after came the Coffins debut full length in 2005, Mortuary in Darkness, which contained 7 tracks, including re-recordings of demo tracks Sacrifice To Evil Spirit and Into The Coffin. A monolithic, lo-fi death doom gem.
In 2006 Coffins followed up Mortuary with their 2nd full length, The Other Side Of Blasphemy, released by Imperium Productions in Europe and 20 Buck Spin in North America. Continuing with the concept of simple brutality laid out on the first album, The Other Side... had an even heavier production with layers of blackened ooze dripping off the guitar and bass strings creating an atmosphere that frontman Uchino likes to describe as "oppressive" in the same way Winter did so effectively over a decade earlier.
In 2007, 20 Buck Spin released a split CD between Coffins and Southern California newcomers The Arm & Sword Of A Bastard God. The split featured two new Coffins' tracks (one of which, Mortification To Ruin, reappears on Buried Death) and a cover of the Pungent Stench classic Bonesawer.
