If this music was released as a series of white label 12's or as trendily opaque CDs on a hip German label like Noton or Chain Reaction the phone lines and chat rooms would be a-buzz as tastemakers scrambled to discover "who is loscil?". loscil is Scott Morgan, a musician based in Vancouver, British Columbia. He has designed music and sound for films, DVDs, CD ROMs, websites and made music to accompany films at Vancouver's independent Burning Light Cinema. loscil first came to the attention of kranky when Morgan sent us a copy of his self-released CDR, A New Demonstration of Thermodynamic Tendencies. The fluctuating tones and pulses reminded us of long time personal favorites Cluster as well as new fangled electronic artists like Gas and Monolake. Morgan points to predecessors like Hugh Lecain, Henry Mancini, Gavin Bryars and Raymond Scott as influences, explaining both the texture and melodic sense at play.
