Mewgatz

Biography

Mewgatz, named after a child's mispronunciation (or is that misconception) of music, is the twisted brain-child of Ed McGregor. Spending the better part of his formative years in a Velux windowed, floral carpeted attic in the midlands with a collection of old abandoned keyboards, Mewgatz quickly turned his electronic graveyard into a sanctuary where he mastered the warped art of circuit-bending.

This guerrilla art-form involves taking an electronic noise making device such as a keyboard or a Furby and intentionally buggering about with its circuitry, shorting out specific points on the circuit-board, creating sounds that were never before thought possible or even desirable.

Mewgatz quickly realised that beneath these harsh mechanical exteriors lay weird and wonderful electronic monologues that he could utilise in creating his genre-defining pop masterpieces. Inspired, he trawled car boot sales nationwide in search of his next victims, as his attic space quickly overflowed with a veritable arsenal of bastardised instruments. However, not content with purely abusing the circuit-boards of Casio SK1s and Speak And Spells, Mewgatz quickly progressed onto much larger and complex electronic instruments. Instruments which should never really be tampered with!

Paying homage to his fascination with original keyboard presets and demo songs, Mewgatz fuses glitching preset bossanova beats and delicate guitar chord progressions with tender untrained vocals, schizophrenically remixing popular contemporary tracks until they're bent out of all recognition into lo-fi electronic ballads drenched in raw, passionate, and vulnerable emotion.

When playing live Mewgatz is a wonder to behold. Beats, melody, bass and vocals are all masterfully spun together into a delicately psychotic show of electronic malfunction. Due to the randomised nature of circuit-bending every show is unique, and the track you hear on one specific night, may never be heard the same way again. With soldering-iron raised firmly towards the heavens, Mewgatz is on a quest for melodic chaos, to find that fleeting moment in the void between human fragility and robotic malfunction, were unpredictability and stability collide.
