interview

During their European tour we thought a few questions and answers from Out Hud, the fantastic Brooklyn-based electro-dub-with-cello band, would be in order. Don't forget to bring them local food delicacies when you go see them. Buy their album, S.T.R.E.E.T. D.A.D., out now on Kranky! Mark from Southern asks, Molly from Out Hud answers. Doughnuts are good.

are you excited about the upcoming european tour? what are you looking forward to? any particular things you want to do (besides playing) when you're here? will it be hard not to compare the dancing (or lack thereof) styles of u.s. vs european audiences?

Yes we are looking especially forward  to eating your fine regional cuisine. If you are reading this and you are coming to our show please bring us a delicious treat. We are not squemish. We are also looking forward to seeing you Euros dance.

how does out hud work musically? is it a musical collective kinda like a more fun godspeed?

All of the boys live together in a warehouse where we practice. We share food and jam. We all hang out togther a lot. We have jokes that other people don't understand. Outsiders refer to us as "the Compound" Draw your own conclusions

kinda bearing in mind the album title, street dad, and as the song titles seem like quotes from people, i was wondering if you have any funny things that your own dad's have said or done? and who is this 'street dad'?

The title of the song "Dad there's a little phrase called too much information" was inspired by something Nic's dad said which I am not at liberty to discuss. As for the Street Dad he was last seen in Nevada...

funniest band you've played with? funniest audience?

We played with Dirty Vegas at the WWF (world wrestling federation) restaurant in Times Square for an MTV Awards party. That takes care of both questions

a friend of mine saw you play with sun city girls. do you like playing shows with bands that don't necessarily have a similar sound to out hud? do you thrive on a 'challenge'?

Yes and yes. That show was really fun The Sun City fans liked us in their own way.

how do you support yourselves when not being out hud? is it a source of inspiration or frustration?

Molly works at a knitting store selling yarn. Phyllis weighs babies at a pediatrician's office and also is a bong tester. Nic babysits and works at an art supply store. Tyler is a bong tester and Justin is also a bong tester.

favourite dough/bread products? in a head to head battle which would win? krispy kreme vs dunkin doughnuts? or perhaps a secret local doughnut bakery? next time we're in nyc or brooklyn where is the best place to find a quality independent doughnut (plain, glazed, preferably)?

Prune Cake and cookies in a roll, or as you Brits would call them, biscuits in a tube. Krispy Kreme would kick ass. As for our favorite doughnuts- There's a place in Manhatten Ave in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn. Phyllis called it "the best doughnut" she's ever eaten

could you see out hud becoming somehow more overtly political especially in the current climate?

Probably not, considering only 2.5 of us even vote. But we do have a new song entitled, "Dear Mr. Bush, There's over 500 words for shit and only one word for music. Fuck You, Out Hud" So that's a start.

do you wish sometimes that a cello was a little smaller?

We actually use an electric cello which is pretty small. I (molly) like how big it is in it's accoustic form cause you can lean on it and people talk to you about it on the street, which can be cool but also annoying.

when's the next record coming out?! we cannot wait!

Hopefully soon. We have a single with vocals on it that's almost done and we're recording a full length in May that will be released on Kranky.

Thank you Molly & Out Hud!
