On Plays Polmo Polpo, songs from Perri's Like Hearts Swelling record are extrapolated beautifully from their origins in his more diffuse, multi-layered, pulsing electronic compositions; but they also serve to remind the listener that Perri has always played guitar, but that in Polmo Polmo it was swaddled it in a throne of drones and submarine beats. On opener “Romeo Heart (Slight Return)”, Perri revives this clustered, layered approach, using an additional nine players to generate a rippling fabric through which the original melody now weaves; but the four songs that follow are more stripped-back, infectious and quietly ecstatic. Fans of Polmo Polpo and brooding, drawn-out guitar pieces in general are sure to like what they find here.
