Sackville's third record, The Principles Of Science, was released on June 7th, 1999. It's the band's first for Constellation - five songs recorded on a hot weekend in June last year, just before they embarked on a long hiatus. This Montreal-based project has been making wonderful damaged roots music in various incarnations since 1994, guided by the song-writing of singer/guitarist Gabe Levine.
Charting a path through country and pop traditions, always with a deft lyrical touch, Sackville has developed a highly original and evocative sound on this new recording. Distilling a wider range of folk, rock and avant influences, The Principles Of Science is their most cohesive and accomplished work, resonating with a modernist spirit at once bold and subtle.
Three songs are driven by Gabe's bright, droney finger-picked acoustic guitar and pulsing piano courtesy of Ian Ilavsky (ex-Sofa), with the gorgeous violin work of Gen Heistek (Pest 5000) offering rich and understated melodic and rhythmic accents. Harris Newman adds upright and electric bass on some of the material, and drummer Pat Conan joins the band on two songs - the sparse, expressive interplay between electric guitar and drums on "Four-alarm Fire" highlights his talents. A guest vocal appearance by Jessica Moss on "If His Shadow Moves On The Water" rounds out the cast of Montreal musicians involved in the sessions from which this album is culled.
