Entering the social scene is a curious rite of passage, an instilled social ritual which teenage women participate in with almost instinctual abandon. To make the scene, the "debutante" follows social norms by subscribing to the correct fashion, hairstyle and association with the "popular" crowd. For an insight into this strange world check out the film/TV series "Clueless" or the truly wonderful "Buffy The Vampire Slayer". Olympia's Sub Debs celebrate those women who just don't meet the standards required to make a splash into the social arena...introverts, tomboys, brainiacs, punks, the obligatory bad girls smoking in the toilets ...and especially those who go overboard, employing all the right accessories, but sacrificing the tact. This is what truly defines a Sub Deb : adoption of cosmetics and attitude to excess, forcing fashion into folly. |

Sassy punk rock is the modus operandi for the Sub Debs, redefining early 80's punk/new wave and early 90's riot grrrl with a totally modern angle. Reminescent of the energetic vitality which made The Go-Go's, X-Ray Spex and The Runaways punk rock forces to be reckoned with. The Sub Debs colour their package of pure "debutante rock" with shades of Heavens To Betsy's minimalism, propelled by a shimmering guitar punch. With succinct songs serving as a feisty and rollicking vehicle, the musical makeover becomes complete as the band deck themselves out with colourful wigs, elaborate dresses and intense make-up to large it live! Recorded at Dub Narcotic Studios by Calvin Johnson She's So Control, the full-length debut by the Sub Debs, is an album of punk rock pageantry, a cabaret of sound and vision offering a salute to those women striving for glamour but falling short, the not-quite-debutante. |
