Song Of The Week: Subhumans - Internal Riot - "This is Not an Advert"
It sucks to be 24. I missed everything: 2-tone, Van Halen, but what really pisses me off is that I missed Subhumans, as I was barely able to walk when they called it a day. The Wiltshire-based anarchist punk ensemble, who were stalwarts of the scene amongst peers such as Crass and The Clash, retired in 1985 with five full-lengths, six EP's and an array of punk as fuck cassettes in their back catalogue. Now they are back with a tremendous new album Internal Riot, which is their first new material in nine years, and it's incredible. Keeping with the tradition of previous releases, it is released on their own label Bluurg and will be followed by a UK tour in December.
This week's song of the week is "This is not an advert" which perfectly exemplifies the return of Dick Lucas' rage against the world, the government, capitalism and advertising--bursting forth with the kind of energy that is unique to this legendary band. Skewed punk blasts alongside Wire-like slices of tension. Sharp, articulate punk at its absolute finest. This song is a great introduction to the new album. I'll leave you with a few words from Dick Lucas, "Song words are passing moments of thought that can relate forever" (Crisispoint zine 1982).
