Song of The Week: Clues - 'Perfect Fit'

This week we're tipping our jaunty-angled hats to the oddball pop of Montreal's latest contortionists, Clues.

With ex-members of the wonderful Unicorns and those moping dandies Arcade Fire, we at Southern HQ have been anticipating Clues with an eager curiosity. Could the ex-jewels of Canada's indie-crown come up with enough to step out of their own shadows? Well, it's high-time we stopped hoarding our trinkets and shared the wealth.

The Song Of The Week coming your way this time is "Perfect Fit". Although my personal favourite is actually album closer, "Lets Get Strong" - with it's clunky, off-key piano and sweet, jaded optimism - but this isn't about me. Back to "Perfect Fit". We begin with hushed, swaying keys of a slightly eastern flavour, then lurch straight into melodrama and right back again - all the while lamenting, it seems, from the point of view of a stubborn and forlorn old Ukranic gentleman. And then it gets even better! Oh aye.

Released on 18th May by our good friends and champions of all that is special, Constellation, this Clues record is beginning to surprise many. It manages to remind us of what was so exciting about the sharp rise and even sharper decline of the Unicorns, yet giving us the dark sentiment, orchestration and swirling production that they never could have provided. Clues have turned out to be quite something.
